New Version and Features of Flagship System to be Showcased at NAB2006

South San Francisco, CA, – April 18, 2006 – Envivio, Inc. announced that it has shipped over 400 4Caster™ B3 encoding systems for commercial deployment of IPTV and broadcast contribution applications worldwide. With the industry's leading picture quality, the flagship system has reached a record number of sales since its introduction six months ago. Applications benefiting from these encoding systems include IPTV, digital satellite news gathering (DSNG), and live broadcasting. In the newest version, improved features further optimize the B3's compression capabilities and provide enhanced operator control settings. The new and improved B3 will debut at NAB2006 and will be showcased in the Envivio booth #SL4403.

New Delhi Television Ltd. Selects 4Caster B3 for DSNG

"We've recently equipped our entire fleet of news gathering vehicles to the new 4Caster B3. We've been an Envivio customer since 2003 when we launched the world's first digital satellite news gathering network based entirely on MPEG-4 encoding," said Rahul S. Deshpande, Chief Technology Officer at New Delhi Television Ltd.

"We've always been impressed with the quality of the Envivio encoders and the new B3 does not disappoint at all. The quality and features of this encoder are simply outstanding," commented Dinesh Singh, Deputy Chief Engineer at New Delhi Television Ltd.

4Caster B3 Delivers Highest Picture Quality Available for IPTV and Broadcast Applications

Showcased in a number of demonstrations at NAB in the Envivio booth, the newest version of the B3 contains a firmware upgrade providing enhanced operator control and new features for optimization. The B3 will be also be demonstrated in the following NAB booths: On Call Communications in the PanAmSat booth #OE300, SWE-DISH #OE314, and Verizon Business #SL2403.

The sleek one rack unit (1RU) form factor of the B3 is now available in either a truck or chassis mount. Firmware upgrades come standard with newer versions of the encoder and are available for older B3 models. In Picture Quality Rating (PQR) comparisons, the new version of the B3 required less than half the bit rate to provide the same quality level as a state-of-the-art MPEG-2 encoder and yielded 20% improvements over the original B3.

New features of the 4Caster B3 include:

  • Enhanced video analysis modules
  • New rate controls including capped variable bit rate (VBR) and average bit rate (ABR) settings
  • Low delay mode optimized for sub 2 megabit applications
  • Closed captioning support
  • Improved B frames coding
  • Configurable Type of Service (ToS) byte
  • On the fly bit rate change

The system provides the highest quality, full resolution video at less than 2 Mbps. B3 offers broadcasters and IPTV service providers greater processing power for advanced compression capabilities and noise reduction for bandwidth constrained applications. Increased bandwidth efficiency combined with high quality video in lower bit rates, allows broadcasters and network operators to expand service offerings while optimizing throughput over their distribution networks.4Caster B3 delivers the most complete implementation of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression techniques available and is ideal for SD broadcast contribution, distribution and IPTV applications.
