First High Efficiency HD Compression Solution Designed Expressly for China Unveiled by Envivio

Flexible Standard Support, Envivio Extreme Compression and Localized Interface Provide Custom Fit for Broadcast Services in China

South San Francisco, CA – March 22, 2010 – Envivio Inc. has announced the immediate availability of a new member of its 4Caster™ C4 Three Screens video encoders/transcoder product family designed specifically to address the goals and requirements of digital terrestrial broadcast service providers in China. Enhancing video quality by as much as 35 percent over previous generations and reducing HD bit rate requirements below 6 Mbps, the new 4Caster C4 CHD enables broadcasters to dramatically enhance their high definition (HD) television services. It features new user interfaces, built entirely in Chinese, to simplify configuration and management. The system will be demonstrated at CCBN 2010 (Hall 3, Stand 3401) in Beijing from March 23-25.

Broadcasters can use the enhanced efficiency of the 4Caster C4 CHD to add more channels within their existing bandwidth allotment or to enhance the quality of existing HD channels. Broadcast service providers will also realize increased value thanks to Envivio’s exclusive, flexible software architecture which enables deployment of enhancements for both quality and efficiency long after the solution is implemented. Unlike systems built on fixed ASIC technology, Envivio’s extensible software platform is quickly and easily updated as new technologies such as AVS evolve into standards—a significant advantage in a dynamic, growing market such as China.

Advanced Pre-Processing
A new spatial denoising filter increases the quality of HD source material before processing to maximize the final quality of the video and improve the overall efficiency of encoding and transcoding operations.

Envivio Extreme HD Codec
Built on a new generation platform, 4Caster C4 CHD takes advantage of several technical advances made by Envivio. Envivio codec scientists have developed the new Extreme HD codec: a high-performance algorithm that maximizes HD video quality at the extremely low bit rates required by most IPTV deployments. Other technologies include:

• Patented “stripe” encoding that removes artifacts caused by slicing processes
• Advanced GOP structures with hierarchical B frames and optimized reference and memory management that allow faster zapping without impacting video quality
• Scene change with weighted prediction

Unlike ASIC-based systems built on technology that is now several years old, the Envivio 4Caster C4 CHD derives its processing power from the latest generation of Intel multi-core processors.

Efficient Headends Made Simple
4Caster C4 CHD directly transcodes MPEG-2 and H.264 IP input streams or baseband HD-SDI. It eliminates the need for additional equipment such as IRDs for ingesting satellite sources and enables the design of video headends that use less equipment, reduce power consumption, scale easily, and which are operationally more efficient. 4Caster C4 CHD features dual ASI outputs and supports the DTMB standard for digital broadcast applications.
