Envivio.com, Inc. and InterTrust Announce Strategic Alliance

Envivio's MPEG-4 suite to feature InterTrust's leading digital rights management technology

Brisbane, California, Date: October 17, 2000 — Envivio.com, Inc. and InterTrust Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: ITRU), today announced that Envivio will integrate InterTrust's digital rights management (DRM) technology in Envivio's forthcoming integrated MPEG-4 post-production suite for the broadcast market. The release will permit broadcasters to take advantage of MPEG-4's superior scalability, services and interactivity with viewers, and to realize new revenues from their broadcast operations. Authored content will be persistently protected as it is distributed on the Internet and used, and broadcasters will be able to easily implement the business models they choose.

MPEG-4 is the next generation standard, widely acclaimed by broadcast and communications experts as the benchmark for 21st Century ip broadcasting. Broadcasters, content developers and other post production organizations can author rich media scenes with audio, video, text, graphics and viewer interactivity, all within an orderly object oriented environment. Once authored, the media can be distributed without further modification to any MPEG-4 capable device such as set top boxes, PCs, PDAs and other consumer information devices.

This announcement is important to Envivio's target market of major broadcasters, who require robust digital rights management before they are willing to release to their content on diverse broadcast networks. Envivio's end-to-end MPEG-4 solution will:

  • be the first fully standards-based solution for interactive AV streaming and DRM;
  • increase broadcast revenues through new interactive programming and enhanced advertising value;
  • reduce post-production costs through simplified encoding requirements and streaming in a standardized format to a range of different viewer appliances with the opportunity for business rules based on the usage or appliance;
  • permit broadcasters to provide track media usage and user micro-payments in order to compensate content licensors;
  • allow for multiple media objects of various types (3D, 2D, text, video, audio) to be controlled separately;
  • enable MPEG-4 content security and control over the use of their content via support for standardized MPEG-4 IPMP (Intellectual Property Management Protocol) APIs.

"We are pleased to announce our relationship with the leading developer of end-to-end MPEG-4 interactive broadcast solutions," said Edmund Fish, EVP and Chief Business Officer, InterTrust Technologies Corporation. "The development partnership with Envivio will allow broadcasters to serve high-quality digital media with confidence that their rights to the content are not compromised. The result is that the broadcast community will now have a safe, compelling business model for broadcasting in an ip-addressed space, including cable networks and the Internet."

"When our development plans called for industry-leading digital rights management capabilities, InterTrust was our first choice for a partner" said Julien Signes, CEO of Envivio. "We're excited about the opportunity to work with InterTrust to integrate their technologies into the MPEG-4 market."
