Envivio, STiNO, and TUXIA Combine Leading MPEG-4 Technology and Linux iTV Middleware to Bring Efficient, Cost-Effective World of Multimedia to TV Screens

Companies to Demonstrate End-to-End MPEG-4 Interactive iTV Solutions at IBC2003, Amsterdam

IBC2003, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, September 12, 2003 – Envivio, Inc., a leading provider of MPEG-4 broadcast and streaming solutions, STiNO Media AG, a provider of MPEG-4 set-top box and consumer products, and TUXIA, Inc., a leading provider of advanced Linux-based iTV software platforms, today announced an MPEG-4 iTV solution using the open architecture of Linux and MPEG-4 standards.

The solution integrates Envivio’s MPEG-4 player with the STiNO s-box 4000 set-top box, driven by TUXIA Linux-based iTV Middleware TASTE 3.6 software. The solution will be showcased September 12-16 in Envivio Stand 4.261 and STiNO Media AG Stand 3.436 at IBC2003, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The STiNO s-box 4000 STB is considered the ‘Porsche’ under the digital streaming set-top box market. Powered by a VIA C3 800 MHz CPU in combination with Sigma’s MPEG-4 decoder chip solution, the s-box 4000 contains optimized hardware for high-performance MPEG-4 streaming and web browsing. Because of its open hardware and software platform, it can now also support DVB-S and DVB-T applications. An Envivio MPEG-4 player is built into the s-box 4000 for compelling interactive TV playback. The TUXIA TASTE software technology, with its TSE platform builder kit, is fully customizable and configurable for allowing developers to build iTV applications.

By using Linux OS and XML-based GUI on a Mozilla web browser, TUXIA’s componentized TSE platform builder kit shortens the time of development and time-to-deploy, thereby reducing the development cost while providing manufacturers and system integrators with a reusable software platform for multiple customers.

Broadcasters can also use the open-standard Envivio 4Caster™ MPEG-4 real-time encoder, 4Sight MPEG-4 streaming server (for video on demand), and 4Manager™ MPEG-4 management and control system at the headend to distribute and manage the interactive content and offer additional MPEG-4 value-added services.

Combined, the Envivio MPEG-4 system, STiNO s-box 4000, and TUXIA TASTE middleware demonstrate an enhanced iTV end-to-end solution, from encoding to decoding.

"TUXIA’s Purple TASTE and STiNO’s s-box 4000 integrate easily with Envivio’s interactive MPEG-4 player, as well as the Envivio 4Caster real-time encoder, Envivio 4Sight streaming server, and Envivio 4Manager control system, which are configured for MPEG-4 headend iTV encoding solutions," said Julien Signes, President and CTO of Envivio. "We are excited to work respectively with these leaders in Linux-based iTV implementation and set-top box design and development."

"The combination of TUXIA, STiNO, and Envivio brings Linux-based iTV solutions to a higher level," said Hannes Eisele, CEO at TUXIA. "The power of the s-box, coupled with Envivio MPEG-4 solutions and TUXIA middleware, result in reduced bandwidth, higher-performance, and new complementary interactive applications and revenue opportunities."

"STiNO is proud to work with Envivio and TUXIA – the leaders in open-standards MPEG-4 and Linux solutions," said Franz Hintermayr, CEO, STiNO Media AG. "Our standards-based s-box 4000 set-top box provides the third component to complete the highest performance end-to-end MPEG-4 Linux-based solution in the broadcast marketplace."
